Join Us.

The Myopia Hunt community is welcoming to all riders. If you are an experienced foxhunter and would like to ride out with us, consider becoming a Subscribing Member. If you are a seasoned rider but new to foxhunting, Capping for a few rides is a great way to introduce yourself and your horse to hunting.

  • Subscribers are members of the hunt who may ride in all meets and participate in all activities and events.

  • Cappers are non-subscribers who ride in the hunt.

  • Patrons support the hunt, but do not ride. They participate in all activities and events.

  • Spectators are welcome to follow the hunt as we ride through each meet's territory. There are often opportunities to view the hounds at work, the Hunt staff, and the field of riders behind them.

There is no need to be a member of the Hunt or a member of the Myopia Hunt Club to participate in all the fun and exciting activities sponsored by our group. We hope you will join us!

Please feel free to contact Hunt Secretary, Mary Milgrom, if you would like to join us or have questions.

 Our Hunting Season

Spring Roading - Late April through May

Summer Hound Exercise - June through August

Cubbing - September

Formal Season - Late September through November

For details about current hunting schedule (called Fixtures), see the fixture calendar.

SPRING ROADING introduces hounds, riders and horses to the Hunt at a quieter pace than in the fall. On Thursday fixtures, a scent is not laid so the pace is much slower.

SUMMER HOUND EXERCISES take place in the Myopia Schooling Field and focus on continued training of the hounds at a very quiet pace; no scent is laid. Both these seasons offer a good opportunity for building fitness of the horse and rider and for the introduction and training of inexperienced horses and riders.

During CUBBING and FORMAL SEASON hounds, horses and riders are improving their fitness and the hunts are longer and faster, with the exception of Thursdays when no lines are laid, so the pace is much slower. Ratcatcher attire is worn during Roading and Cubbing and formal attire during the Formal Season. We begin at many different location throughout the season, and you can find the exact locations and time we ride here on our website or through weekly Hunt News email updates.

We encourage you to participate in this wonderful sport, and to honor and perpetuate the Myopia Hunt traditions which have existed since 1882. Any member of the Hunt Committee will be happy to assist you and to answer any questions you may have about dress, your horse, protocol in the Hunt Field, or any other topic.  We are happy to have you with us and look forward to having you join us often!

Fields

For riders, there are two fields, a Jumping Field, and a Hilltopping Field for those who desire an opportunity to view the hounds at a slower pace. At larger meets and on weekends during the formal season, there is often a second “pick and choose” field, which follows first field but the rider has the option to either jump or gap any fences.

Junior Riders

The Myopia Hunt also offers meets dedicated to Juniors. These "Junior Hunts" are clearly published in the hunt fixtures and on this web site's Calendar. On Junior Hunts, the Juniors ride at the front of the Hunt and are assigned the roles of Field Master and Whippers-in. Adults on quiet horses are welcome to ride behind the Juniors.  Even if you do not ride, we welcome you to join the Hunt community as a spectator, volunteer, or patron. There are many events, both mounted and unmounted, to enjoy. There is no need to be a member of the Hunt or a member of the Club to participate in all the fun and exciting activities sponsored by our group. We hope you will join us!

The Myopia Hunt is committed to encouraging Junior Riders to join the hunt field and experience the beautiful countryside we live in. A Junior Rider is someone who is under 19 years of age during the current calendar year. The young riders of today are our future guardians of open spaces; instilling the love of cross country riding has never been more important. We have hunts dedicated exclusively to the Junior field and hope that everyone who is able will join the hounds and the huntsman. The pace will be slower and consideration will be given to our younger riders. Green and difficult horses are asked to stay home and enjoy their pastures on these dates! Junior capping fees:

  • Tuesday and Thursdays: $30.00

  • Saturdays: $50.00

  • Holidays: $60.00

Please understand that correct attire is appreciated and encouraged. Juniors should wear either formal show or hunt attire during the formal hunt season (black or navy blue coat, white hunt shirt and stock tie, and black hunt boots or black half-chaps and black paddock boots) or ratcatcher attire (tweed coat, ratcatcher shirt and collar, jodhpurs and paddock boots.)  However many juniors do not own all of the articles listed and a neat and safe turn-out with heeled boots and a safety helmet is all that is REQUIRED. All Juniors must be escorted by an adult rider until their 19th birthday unless given express permission by a Master. For more information about the Junior Program, contact Amy Camerlin @ 781-439-0747 or avcamerlin@gmail.com.
